In modern times, I have noticed that our society still has significant issues in accepting alternate gender identities. You only need to look at the prevalence of social media posts, school bullying, hate crimes, and the resultant suicide rates by those who aren’t accepted by their peers.
It is very important to note that makeup has been used by men to symbolise their wealth, power & masculinity from as early as 4000 BCE. It wasn't until 1800 CE when it became a symbol of femininity.
The intention of this project is to create simple, but powerful, portraits of men with full glam makeup on whilst wearing what they would typically wear on a day-to-day basis. With these photographs I aim to educate and challenge attitudes towards the definition and characteristics of masculinity, which in turn, drives acceptance.
